During the scene depicting the father-son discussion between Butch (Costner) and Buzz (Lowther) - inside the farmer's stolen car at about 40" - the passenger-side profile frames use perspective to depict the boy superimposed over the man in the same physical dimensions, alluding to the many character connections established between the two as the plot continues to develop. Butch also continually refers to vehicles as "time machines", another indication that this character is reliving a revisionist impression of his own youth via these vicarious connections to his young captive.
