Both leading female protagonist Shelley Hennig and lead female antagonist Heather Sossaman hail from successful supernatural action genre shows adapted from cult classic box office failures dealing with teenagers transitioning from high school into adulthood whilst fighting horrific monsters stemming from demons to werewolves. Hennig from the MTV Jeff Davis developed still running series Teen Wolf (2011), which is prominently referenced in the film and to which Hennig portrays main character Malia Tate on, and Sossaman from the Joss Whedon series Buffy l'ammazzavampiri (1997) to which she was featured as a sick Der Kindestod targeted young girl in the episode Buffy l'ammazzavampiri: Killed by Death (1998).
