Creator D.J. MacHale was uninterested in writing the wraparound scenes for the Midnight Society, but he knew recurring characters were necessary. He thought the reason most anthology shows failed was due to a lack of consistency, which television audiences needed to keep tuning in each week. He wrote, directed, and filmed all the scenes with the Midnight Society quickly and made them as short as possible, because he felt the stories they told were more interesting. (This is also why no explanation was given for Eric's departure after the first season.) To his surprise, the Midnight Society became very popular with viewers.
