Kubrick and Clarke received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay, even though the script was based on Clarke's short story "The Sentinel." They lost to Mel Brooks who won for Per favore, non toccate le vecchiette (1967), so when Clarke met Brooks years later he jokingly growled at him, "Mel, you stole my Oscar!"
