The ornithopters are an extreme departure from what is described in the books. The "ornitho" prefix refers to birds, with the vehicles having both thrusters and flapping wings. The "pter" refers to the wings. Perhaps the best visual concept of an ornithopter is a graceful glider-like craft in red by fantasy artist Roger Dean, who is best known for his album covers for the bands Yes and Asia.
