James Dean's explosive performance was a revelation for audiences at the time, as he was the first male actor to display such raw emotion on screen. However, critics were surprisingly indifferent to him, many of them panning his performance as an embarrassment of indulgent overacting. Had Dean survived the release of his second film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), it is likely that the critics would have been even more antagonistic, as his eccentric mannerisms and histrionic explosions are nearly identical to those he displayed in his film debut. But Rebel Without a Cause (1955) was released on October 29, 1955, less than a month after his tragic death, rendering it immune to attack, and serving as a eulogy to mourn and celebrate his meteoric, all-too-brief moment in the Hollywood sun.
