Barry Purves was originally involved with creating the Martians for the film using stop-motion animation and helped develop some of their gestures. He developed a test reel with 70 animators over eight months, but when the effects were projected to push the budget up to $100 million, the film's producers decided to use computer-generated images instead and Purves was never credited for his contributions.
