Brian Levinson who plays Michael was cast because Danny De Vito heard about him from Bob Saget and suggested him for the role. Saget and Levinson worked two years earlier on the made for TV movie Father and Scout (1994). Michael's character in the movie differs much than his book counterpart. In the book Michael doesnt really react much as a character and simply neglects and ignores Matilda. In the movie he is verbally and emotionally abusive to her in the same way her parents are.
