Takeo Saeki killed his son Toshio in the Japanese films because he wrongly suspected that Toshio was not his son, but rather Kobayashi's son instead, the result of an affair between him and Kayako. This motive doesn't carry over to the American remakes, as Kobayashi's American counterpart is Peter Kirk, a Caucasian man. Instead, Takeo kills Toshio in this film because he walked in on him killing Kayako, and he needed to kill him as he was a witness to his crime.
