While the novel and Lo Hobbit - Un viaggio inaspettato (2012) are mostly told through Bilbo's point of view, this movie shifts the perspective to mainly Gandalf and Thorin, with little involvement from Bilbo in many major scenes. Most of this material was adapted from the Appendices included in the novel 'The Return of the King', and 'Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth' (specifically a chapter called The Quest of Erebor).
