Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler), and Sean Astin (Bob Newby) were all born in 1971. Season one takes place mainly in 1983, and season two opens on the day before Ryder's 13th birthday - meaning all three of them were roughly the same age in real life as all of the main young child characters were when the series takes place.
