The original script by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis was in development hell for so long that a reference to it appears in Brian de Palma's 1981 film Blow Out (1981), in which John Travolta's character Jack, while talking to a movie director, says that they worked together on a movie called "Bordello of Blood", which wasn't the title of an existing movie until 15 years later, when Robert Zemeckis produced this film.
