James Gray's father died of Covid, 2 months after production wrapped while editing was being done. James Gray said of this, since it was based on his childhood: "Of course, I was deeply saddened by [my father's death]. And I was on good terms with him, and it's not exactly a very pleasant circumstance, and yet, I do feel -as awful as this is to admit -a slight bit of relief that he never saw the movie. Because I don't know what his reaction would've been to it.".
