Leiji Matsumoto originally intended that Mamoru Kodai, who was missing in action against the Gamilas, become the space pirate Captain Harlock. However, ratings forced the series' episodes to be cut down, and that concept had to be shelved; besides, Matsumoto liked Harlock and did not want his first appearance to be "done in half-measures", and instead gave him his own series Capitan Harlock (1978).
