George C. Scott's character, Claude Dancer, mentions that he learned a French word for panties while "serving overseas in the war". While Scott served in the Marine Corps during World War II, he spent his entire stint in Washington D.C. and was not sent overseas. Most of the principle male cast members served in the World Wars, including James Stewart, Arthur O'Connell and Joseph N. Welch. Oddly enough, Ben Gazzara, who plays U.S. Army Lieutenant Frederick Manion in the film, did not serve in the military.
