During the opening credits sequence in the beginning of the film, when Mark is running back to his dorm, director David Fincher intended to use Elvis Costello's song "Beyond Belief". Even though everyone tried to talk him out of it, it wasn't until Fincher heard composer Trent Reznor's piece "Hand Covers Bruise" that he dropped his initial idea.
