The paintings on the wall in Charlotte Richards's office are of pomegranates. Some scholars believe the pomegranate, rather than the apple, to be the real fruit from the tree of knowledge. Pomegranates also reference the Greek myth of Persephone, with Charlotte/Mum returning to the world of the living from Hell, while, like Persephone, being in some way unable to entirely escape it.
