In his breakthrough role in Gente comune (1980), Timothy Hutton played a son in another dysfunctional family also torn apart by memories of a death in the family. In that movie, his mother, played by Mary Tyler Moore, is cold and distant, much like his mother is in this series. This has a detrimental effect on the other surviving members, such as the problems the Crain siblings experience when their father, Hutton's character, becomes withdrawn in their relationships, albeit for a different reason that only relates due to both including the same actor.
