Doug is an original character compared to the others and shares no Japanese film counterpart (Rika, Karen's Japanese counterpart, did not have a boyfriend in the original). His fate does however mirror that of Mariko, Rika's best friend from Ju-on: The Grudge (2002). Both follow the protagonist to the Saeki home and are promptly killed as a result.
