Producer Gale Anne Hurd called the film a "requel" because it's a bit of a reboot, and a bit of a sequel to Hulk (2003). Indeed, while the two films take place in different continuities, this one does seem to pick up where the 2003 version left off. At the end of the 2003 film, Banner flees the country and wanders the world in search of a cure for his condition, and this film begins with Banner having been on the run for five years in search of a cure.
