Plans to make an ongoing franchise, a la Indiana Jones, were considered for years after this film was made. Another sequel was considered in both 2005 (with the proposed title "The Crimson Eagle") and 2008 (retitled "Racing the Monsoon), with the plots revolving around Joan, Jack, and their teenaged children going on another globetrotting treasure hunt together. In 2007, plans to either remake the first film, rebooting the franchise entirely, were considered, with Katherine Heigl to play Joan and Jack possibly played by either Taylor Kitsch or Gerard Butler. In 2011, the remake was being retooled as a television series. As of 2022, none of these plans have come to fruition.
