Marcello Mastroianni appears twice in the film. His photo is stuck on Alberto and Luca's makeshift Vespa and a clip of I soliti ignoti (1958) which he starred in can be glimpsed on a TV in a neighbor's house when Giulia and Luca are walking on the roofs of Portorosso. The homage goes on in the french version of the film as Marcello Mastroianni's daughter, famous french actress Chiara Mastroianni, is voicing the character of Luca's mom in the french dub. Chiara Mastroianni had first been contacted by Pixar during the production of the film as legal representative of the Mastroianni estate, to allow her father's image to appear in the film.
