Even though he had directed episodes of the TV show Tales From The Crypt, Bordello of Blood was director Gil Adler's first time directing a movie based on Tales From The Crypt, as well as his first time directing a feature film. Adler had to regularly deal with the film's executive producers scrutinizing his directing decisions based on the film's dailies. One situation involved executive producer Joel Silver criticizing the way Adler lit Angie Everhart for a scene while executive producer Richard Donner felt Adler was doing a fine job with the lighting. When Adler first talked to Joel Silver, he realized Joel didn't really look at the dailies which caused a big tussle between them. From an interview, Adler recalls why he and the movie faced more scrutiny compared to director Ernest Dickerson and the previous Tales From The Crypt film Demon Knight, "Probably because of me. I had never directed a feature. Ernest [Dickerson, director of Demon Knight] had made a couple of movies and was an established director. They probably had more trust and faith in him. Although Robert Zemeckis [another executive producer of Bordello] said, 'Don't listen to anybody, don't listen to my partners. Just do what you want to do, because that's why we want you to do it.'"
