Towards the end of the movie, Scarlett, George, and Zed encounter a huge hole and Scarlett says they must jump. They confess their sins before jumping and miraculously survive the fall. In Dante's Inferno, the only way a sinner can escape Hell is by admitting their sins and truly atone for them. The groups does this and literally takes a leap of faith which is how they're able to escape Hell.
