One of the biggest changes that Catherine Hardwicke insisted on when she came on board was rewriting the part of the Grandmother. In David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick's original script, she was the archetypal little old lady. Hardwicke felt that an elderly woman living alone in the forest would need to be a lot more resilient and badass.
