During Season 5, Zooey Deschanel's character Jess was sequestered for jury duty. The reason for this, the show remained in production after wrapping season four in order to get a jump on season five ahead of Zooey Deschanel's maternity leave. Deschanel was absent in six episodes of the fifth season. Megan Fox was brought in temporarily during Deschanel's absence.
