The shot of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum looking down at the Black Gate mirrors a similar shot in Il mago di Oz (1939), featuring the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Both sets of heroes find their destination heavily guarded, with new armies arriving. Later in both stories, one of the characters (Dorothy, Frodo) is captured, and in order to move around in the enemy's territory, all the heroes must dress in enemy uniforms.
