The laboratory explosions in Russian scientist Valdo (David Dencik)'s laboratory are a series of blasts. To achieve this, the FX team linked butane canisters together and then set them off with controlled computerized detonators. Special Effects Supervisor Chris Corbould said: "[Director] Cary [Joji Fukunaga] was quite insistent that he wanted the space in between the explosions to be very short and to have a certain method to it. So we had to design the explosion very specifically."
