Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg wrote a draft of the script, but was ultimately rejected by David Heyman in favor of Steve Kloves' draft. Heyman, however, was impressed with his draft, and was subsequently brought in to write the script for Harry Potter e l'Ordine della Fenice (2007) when Kloves backed out to commit to a personal project.
