The film begins with Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, and ends with Operation Cobra where Lieutenant General George S. Patton's 3rd Army leads the breakout from the Normandy beachhead. The music under the opening credits is the march from Il giorno più lungo (1962) (the definitive nonfictional film about Operation Overlord) by Paul Anka, and the music under the end credits is the march from Patton, generale d'acciaio (1970) by Jerry Goldsmith.
