Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the show runner, initially refused to be in charge of the show. When she read The Last Wish, the first book of the original saga, she estimated to not be the "right person" for this job, mainly because she was not experienced with fantasy. But when she read the book again, she found out that "even with removing all fantasy elements, you still have a family story, around three main characters". So she accepted the job.
