The movie is based on the eponymous book by Eric Jager and follows a real-life medieval rape charge ending with a trial by combat. The movie favors Marguerite de Carrouges' version of the events and portrays her accusations against Jacques Le Gris as what really happened. There is of course, after more than 600 years, no way to be sure as to what really occurred and if Le Gris was guilty of the heinous crime. It's interesting to note, however, that Le Gris' lawyer Le Coq (played in the film by Zeljko Ivanek ) in his private notes about the case referenced by Jager seems to express subtle doubts concerning his client's innocence, although he concludes that it's impossible for him to know the truth for certain.
