Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan is a fan of director Akira Kurosawa. As such, he named the film after La sfida del samurai (1961), and wrote the male lead role for Steve McQueen, who had appeared in I magnifici sette (1960), a remake of I sette samurai (1954). Two of the characters in Kurosawa's film La fortezza nascosta (1958) were the inspiration for C-3PO and R2-D2 in the Star Wars films, four of which Kasdan wrote.
