An officer relaying the message added spam words such as 'Send us' and 'more Japs' in a effort to confuse Japanese code-breakers.In Pearl Harbor, the Navy code-breakers put together the message "Send us more Japs!" and mistook it as a signal of defiance. When asked if he sent the message, after the war, Devereux denied saying such a thing, adding, "We had all and more than we could handle right then and there.
