Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Mel Gibson were considered for the role of Moe Howard. Benicio Del Toro was the first cast as Moe but ultimately dropped out. Johnny Knoxville was cast next but after discussions with the director, he wasn't interested in doing an impression. Hank Azaria was offered the part next but asked for too much money.
