Theseus was the son of Poseidon in Greek mythology. (In the film it is hinted that he is the son of Zeus.) He became the king of Athens after his step father, King Aegeus, threw himself from a cliff into the ocean, which became the Aegean, after Theseus forgot to change the colour of his ship after he killed the Minotaur in the labyrinth.
