John Sturges cast German actor Horst Buchholz to play Mexican gunfighter Chico because there was a buzz in Hollywood that initially surrounded Bucholtz that he was going to be "the next Marlon Brando". Despite getting a tan to look more Hispanic, Bucholtz was unable to completely hide his German accent. Like many actors and actresses with foreign accents, his attempts to hide his native accent fails him whenever he speaks while angry or yelling.
