The show took advantage of Tom Selleck's athletic ability numerous times. During the series, Magnum tried out as a quarterback for a pro team, competed in a triathlon, raced in a surf ski contest, played in a pro am tennis match, played shortstop for Robin Masters' co-ed softball team, and participated in a two-man volleyball tournament. He also plays a casual pickup basketball game.
