Adam Sandler had wanted a famous country music singer to play the role of the main antagonist Coach Red Beaulieu. Director Frank Coraci briefly considered George Strait for the role but Disney decided against casting Strait because of his sole movie performance in Pure Country (1992) which was very unsuccessful at the box-office. Sandler, a long time Burt Reynolds fan, happend to be watching Smokey and the Bandit (1977) on TV during pre-production and suggested Jerry Reed who co-starred with Reynolds in that film. Disney approved Reed who ultimately accepted the part.
