Originally, in Jeb Stuart's script, the character of John McClane was supposed to be yet another 1980s "super action hero", so many of the action stars of the era were considered. However, John McTiernan was (in his words) bored with such characters and since Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had worked with McTiernan a year before on Predator (1987), was considered for the role of John McClane, he and Steven E. de Souza rewrote the script. McClane became more of an "average guy" who really didn't want to be there in that situation, but became a hero because he realized that he was the hostages' only hope. McTiernan felt that Bruce Willis, who was primarily known as comedic actor from Moonlighting (1985), could be that average guy, and when Willis got the part, he and de Souza added much more humor to the script to tailor it Willis' comedic talents. Incidentally, in the fourth installment Die Hard - Vivere o morire (2007), McClane talks about not wanting to be involved, but does so because he has no other choice.
