Mukul Anand wanted to make the film Sultanat in 1981. He approached Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. They both agreed to do the film but Amitabh wanted a established director for the film. Mukul Anand refused to part with his script and finally made it with Sunny Deol and Karan Kapoor 5 years later in 1986.
