During the first four years of Marie Antoinette's life in France (1770-1774), there was no queen of France. The aging king Louis XV was largely influenced by his mistress, Madame du Barry (1743-1793)., who dominated court life. Marie Antoinette had a difficult relationship with the royal mistress. In 1774, Louis XV died of natural causes. Within days of his death, Madame du Barry was exiled. Marie Antoinette was reportedly happy with the decision to exile her enemy, though it is unclear whether the new queen had influenced this decision.
