The character of George Smiley was previously played by Sir Alec Guinness, who is best known for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars films. His replacement, Ewan McGregor, also appeared in Il traditore tipo (2016), which is also an adaptation of a John le Carré novel. McGregor's Star Wars cast mate, Natalie Portman, appeared in Gary Oldman in Léon (1994).
