The opening musical theme of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (Thus Spake Zarathustra) - as early man-apes are shown before the famous air-tossed bone-to-spacecraft cut--was itself inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's similarly titled book, in which he covered a transition (or ascension) of humankind from apes into a "super"- human ('Ubermensch'): i.e. much akin to the opening scene Kubrick brought to screen.
