Montgomery Clift coveted the role of T.E. Lawrence and actively lobbied for the part with director Sir David Lean. Producer Sam Spiegel, however, had a low opinion of Clift after the latter's drinking problems surfaced on Suddenly, Last Summer (1959), and he refused to consider casting Clift.
