The character of Batgirl/Barbara Wilson is an original character, though mostly based on the comics character Batgirl/Barbara Gordon. Gordon first appeared in Detective Comics #359 (January 1967), created by the writer Gardner Fox and the artist Carmine Infantino, but based on a concept developed by television producer William Dozier and comics editor Julius Schwartz. They wanted a superheroine that could appeal to a female audience. The main differences consist on Wilson being blonde and being depicted as a teenage girl. Gordon was a redhead, and was already an adult woman when first introduced. Gordon was introduced "as a career woman with a doctorate in library science", working as the head of the Gotham City Public Library.
