The crashed plane Pitt and Giordino find in the desert is depicted as having crashed into a dune. In one of the book's three prologues, "Kitty Mannock," the plan crashed into a wadi, or dry riverbed, with 30-foot deep bays. The boys built the Land Yacht out of plane parts and hoisted it up the slope of the bay while severely dehydrated.
