Soon after the film was released, John Wayne refused to not attend a Hollywood party following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a liberal Democrat. Ronald Reagan and Robert Taylor--who, like Wayne, were arch-conservative Republicans who detested Kennedy-- also insisted on attending the party.
