The hospital on which the show is based was founded in 1736. In 1811, the city purchased about six acres of the Kip's Bay Farm along the East River. Belle Vue Place, along one border, already contained a building - the first to bear the name of Belle Vue Hospital. Later the spelling was changed to Bellevue.
