On becoming producer in 1964, Tim Aspinall decided to cull ten characters/families he deemed unnecessary in what became known as The Great Purge. Victims (in many cases to return, albeit occasionally) were Lynne Carol (Martha Longhurst; widely conceded to be a misjudgement in killing her off during the first episode of Aspinall's brief tenure), Ivan Beavis (Harry Hewitt), Doreen Keogh (Concepta Hewitt), Frank Pemberton (Frank Barlow), Betty Alberge (Florrie Lindley), Graham Haberfield (Jerry Booth) and Susan Jameson (Myra Booth). The actors who escaped his axe were Jennifer Moss (Lucille Hewitt), Anne Reid (Val Barlow) and notably William Roache (Ken Barlow). His actions enabled him to introduce the Ogdens to the Street.
